Shops still on the same site in Central Leeds

Post by jim »

We came to live in Leeds in 1949. I was just idly thinking of all the shops that I remember from those days, and suddenly realised I couldn't recall any still operating on the same site except for (possibly, I'm not certain) Marks and Spencers. Indeed, there aren't many still operating at all, though there are some. Can anyone recall any others still trading on the same site that I may have overlooked or am not aware of, and which shop (not including pubs, banks, theatres etc) has occupied the same site for the longest?

According to https://www.cutoutandkeep.net/blog/2021/6/samuel-taylor Samuel Taylor started at 30 Central Road after WWII and then moved to 10a Central Road in 1961. H Samuel the jewellers used to be at 39 Briggate and moved to 54 possibly in the early 60s when Burton next door redeveloped.

I think W H Smith was on Commercial Street in the 40s/50s, took over the shop next door and thus doubled in size, and later moved just round the corner into Lands Lane where it continues in business. None of them are still on the same site though, so my search continues!

If they are Sid, they certainly aren't on the same site!

Hi jim and tilly

I don't recall when their Duncan Street store closed but Rawcliffes have a store on Roundhay Road, Oakwood.

I think we are talking different Rawcliffes. The one on Duncan Street was mainly clothing, predominantly school sports kit and uniforms but I also think sports equipment. I don't know about the one on Roundhay Road but the Beeston Rawcliffes was furniture.

Also is Nash's definitely gone? It is pre Covid since I was on foot in the vicinity and the Merrion Street side had gone then, confirmed on Streetview, but Streetview suggests the back entrance ( back Merrion Street?) was still there at least 2 years after.
