St simons school burley

Post by Nikki1980 »

Hi my grandma has recently passed away and I remember her telling me a bomb dropped on her school playground I’m sure she said it was St simons but my uncle gave a different school name. It was in the burley area of Leeds can anyone help confirm the correct info

St Simon’s School was in Ventnor Street (between Kirkstall Road and Burley Road) near to where Yorkshire Television is situated nowadays. There are some photographs on Leodis which mention the school but there is no mention of a bomb in the comments which have been posted. There was bomb damage at St Peter's School, near Leeds Parish Church (now the Minster), in 1941, but it is a couple of miles away from Burley.

A possibility, and i do STRESS possibility. Is it possible that St Simons may have been one of the schools used to accomodate the pupils of St Peter's during repair work. As Ian says they would be about 2 miles apart but for those living inbetween it could be a mile or so either way and even in the late sixties I was walked to/from my nearest Primary School which would have been a mile or much less for a crow
