Some on going works resulting in "Mud on the Road" warning signs on the A61 just before the southbound reaches Robin Hood has peaked my interest. As far as I can see there is no planning permission in place but the aerial view is a bit mystifying.

There is a rusting container to the bottom left of the image which appears to be on the bottom left of an area of patchwork/decaying concrete almost the size of a football pitch. Towards the centre is a derelict structure about 25 yards by less than 10. There are places in the concrete that suggest other walls or a larger structure did stand on the site. There are also piles of concrete rubble to the right which may be from demolishing the structures suggested or from the decaying concrete floor.

Does anybody know what did stand there? Also does anyone sknow what work is currently on going even if it is just to remove the concrete and return the site "to nature". Most of the surrounding land to the north back to Rothwell Haigh, to the east down to the Wood Lane estate and to the south towards Robin Hood and Leadwell Lane is farmland.

By 1905 this was the site of Rothwell Haigh/Whitaker's Quarry, site cleared by 1919. By 1932 it had become an asphalt works. I am not aware of further developements. Information from 1905 OS map and from David L. Frank's book "East and West Yorkshire Union Railways". A branch linking this railway at the Robin Hood triangle to the head of the inclined plane at Wood Lane down to the Yorkshire Tar Distillers site and the Midland Railway at Stourton had sidings to the site itself under both ownerships.

That whole area including Dixons site and the near triangular section down to the more or less horizontal road running across eastwards from Wakefield Road and off the edge of what you post is what my post refers to, bounded by the course of the one-time railway branch on the east.
