Scotland Mill Cottages.

Post by Leodian »

There seems to be little obvious remains now of the 6 Scotland Mill Cottages that were built for workers at what was Scotland Mill flax works (later bleach works) by Adel Beck shortly before that becomes Meanwood Beck. If I wasn't for maps and recollections in the Leodis photo archive website it could be very hard to even think there had ever been cottages there.

There is however the remains of a small structure by a track very close to where the cottages were. I have added 2 photos I took of that structure on June 28 2021 (the second one shows a graffitied side). I have also added a section from a 1954 1:1,250 map in the Old-Maps UK website in which the shaded feature just above the "Const" is at or very close to where the structure is, so it might be that feature. The 1954 map also shows the labelled cottages but they were demolished in the early 1960s (1962?). The cottages are on an at least 1893 map.

For interest I have added these links to photos of the cottages in the Leodis website.

The 9 September 1949 map shows some garages and outbuildings, so I wonder if the structure is what's left of one of those.
