Ghost Sign Lower Briggate

Post by blackprince »

Hi,
A recent addition to the Leodis Can You Help section shows a building in Lower Briggate with a ghost sign.

I think SL could provide the information they are looking for. Anyone want to rise to the challenge?

It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

Not sure if it's just me but the link just brings a 500 internal server error, whereas I can access Leodis in the normal way via my own bookmark.

You could try this:

http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... 018_177467

Failing that, just go on to Leodis and look in 'Can you help?':

Looking at the 1908 Directory the only thing I could find was W Wright & son who were coach

Hi uncle mick,

Lambert's Yard was situated off Lower Briggate, just below the Royal Hotel, on the eastern side and above the railway bridge and the river. The yard was surrounded by buildings and one of the entrances was by way of a ginnel from Lower Briggate. There is a photograph of the yard here:

Addendum: I also found this - https://www.flickr.com/photos/7940273@N03/5739418701/

I don't think that it was Lambert's Yard, as, looking at old maps, there was no access for vehicles. Also, most of the yards off Lower Briggate did not appear to have access for vehicles.

I am experiencing the same problem with accessing Leodis at the moment -links to the homepage or individual photos result in an error.
