Passing by the works this week, I noticed the footings of the old buildings which have been exposed, on the north side of the carriageway. Does anyone know if there are plans for any archeology at all?
Hi urban rambler.

I was also wondering if there were any such plans when I looked today (Sept 13 2019) at some of the work going on. It is hard to get near enough to take good photos but these are 3 that I took today (not helped by the bright Sun shining where I took them!). There are bricks exposed under the road surface but many of them been removed or at least disturbed by the digging scoops but there are some still standing bricks that may (or may not) be part of an old building (as seen in the second and third photos).

These are 2 photos that I took of the work on September 19 2019. The first is view taken from near New Briggate along The Headrow looking in the direction towards Eastgate. The second is a close-up of some work on The Headrow near New Briggate. There are lots of loose bricks below the old road surface but also some still intact brickwork of whatever structure it was. I did wonder if it might be a drain but there did not seem to have been one there.

The Headrow, was a lot narrower than it is now. buildings were demolished to widen it. these will be the foundations etc. of the previous buildings.

Looking at this side by side map the perimeter of the old buildings on the north side of the Headrow are under what is now the central reservation

It has been rumoured that this trench is for a piped district heating system. Hot water provided by the Cross Green incinerator...????

Thanks for that Brunel :). I had wondered what reason may be behind the digging of the deep trench and the laying of pipework does seem a very likely suggestion.
