The 3 historic old towers in Holbeck now have a 'new one'.

There are 3 historic old towers in Holbeck by Globe Road that have been landmarks for a long time in the area. Building work has been going on in the area for some while now and during a stroll by the side of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal on April 18 2019 I noticed that work on one new building is now very evident. To show the change in view I have added a photo that I took on January 31 2019 for comparison with one I took on April 18 2019 (the canal was partly frozen over when I took that on January 31 2019). Views seen of the old towers will presumably eventually change a lot.

These are two photos that I took on May 23 2019 of the work going on. The first shows part of Wharf Approach/Office Lock bridge and the Canal Office building. The second shows part of the Office Lock feature on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

Hi Leodian,

Thank you for posting your photographs. I have not been to that area of Leeds for a long time so I am not familiar with the new buildings. Upon seeing your photographs, I wondered why the main building was called 'Mustard Wharf'. I did a bit of research and found that on an 1850 map, there was a building called 'Oil & Mustard Mill' situated between the canal and Water Lane and near to a street called Kaye Street. I couldn't find anything else with 'Mustard' in it, in the Holbeck/Water Lane area. On an 1891 map, the building is shown as part of 'Water Hall Mills'. So, it may be that 'Mustard Wharf' is named after the old mill.

In the 1834, 1852,1872 & 1875 directories, J.J.Armistead are listed as Mustard and chicory manufacturers at Water Hall Mills

I would think Mustard Wharf would be where goods were brought in and products sent out by canal.
