SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

Its not often something stumps me when looking for a fact in relation to an historical walk that Iam planning but right now Iam struggling. Iam looking for the exact address or house on Hollin Lane Far Headingley where Prince Alemayehu died 1879. I have been told it was "number 2" and Iam perhaps looking for confirmation of this. Although this is my first post I have been a member for a while under different details but cant remember the stuff to log back in. So I have re registered anew to try and find this tiny piece of information which no one apart from a random lady on Facebook seems to know.

Cyril Ransome b.1852 Manchester, d.1897 Leeds. The 1891 census records him living at Balmoral Terrace, off Shaw Lane, Headingley.
Reading from the 1881 census the route / order of residents on the census return seems to be;
St Ann’s Terrace, Shaw Lane [North to South], four residences – although it now seems to comprise five residences, the end of the building possibly once a built on coach-house now being a home in its own rite.
Turns left from Shaw Lane onto Claremont Road.
Balmoral Terrace South to North. First residence, unoccupied. Middle residence – the Ransome's resdence [so this is where your “No.2” comes from]. Northern most residece - the Leedham family.

As Liits has stated the 1891 census shows Cyril Ransome at Balmoral Terrace, and the 1891 Electoral Register shows Cyril Ransome living at number 2 Balmoral Terrace.

Here is a copy of the 1891 census showing the Ransome family, notice on the third line Cyril's famous author son Arthur, writer of Swallows and Amazons and many other books.
Prince Alemayehu only went to live with his old tutor Cyril for about 8 weeks in 1879 before his death.

1953 map of Balmoral Terrace with house numbers, which shows that number 2 was the house in the centre of the block.

According to David Hall's book "Far Headingley Weetwood & Westpark," Prince Alamayou Died at 1 Hollin Lane. (notes 1 Hollin Lane is 1 Glebe Villas,now 2 Hollin Lane.)

A quick search has Rev Horace Annesley Powys living alone (not counting 2 servants) at Glebe Villas in 1881 and he was assistant Master at Leeds Grammar School. He would become vicar of Meanwood 2 years later.

Place of death doesn't necessarily reflect place of residence at time of death and reasons for being at Glebe Villas could include quarantine in a larger house with fewer occupants.

The original question was as to where he died, not where he lived at that time.

This is a quote from David hall's book. Cyril Ransome explains,"Prince Alamayou came to live with me and Rev Annesley-Powys,now Vicar of Meanwood at 1 Hollin lane, Far Headingley.Unfortunately by a foolish act ,he caught a violent cold which developed into pneumonia. Though he was attended from the very first by Dr Clifford Allbutt,he died in the presence of Mrs Jex-blake,a nurse and myself on November 14th 1879.I accompanied the body to Windsor where it was buried on November 22nd in St George's Chapel."
