The old bank at the bottom of North Street.

I fairly regularly see the old Midland bank at the bottom of North Street. It has long looked disused, though I've always assumed it must be owned by someone. Passing by (on a bus) today I noticed that the street doors were open! I cannot recall ever seeing them open before. It may be simply that whoever owns the building was paying a visit, but I wonder if it may be a sign that some action on the building is taking place or about to take place?

I passed through those doors hundreds of times in the late 1950s / 60s handling the cash for the firm I worked for in North Street. a fine building but my abiding memory of that place is of one cashier who as he counted your monies being payed in, should he find a pound or ten bob note the other way round to the rest he would pause, look up at you for a few seconds, turn the offending note round, sigh then resume counting.

I used to go in to see the Manager around early December each year and borrow £100, go round East St. toy wholesalers and by January I had turned it into about £150. the manager was very pleased but I then used to whip the £50 out by early February. Happy Days.

Cheers j.c.d. for that interesting information. :)

I wonder what the inside of the building looks like now? Perhaps some of the fixtures and fittings in the old bank still survive.

[quote="Leodian"]Cheers j.c.d. for that interesting information. :) Maybe someone can have a peep inside and report. thoughit it not a small building the actual area for the public was quite narrow with the counter on the left, there was only about 9 feet from the windows to the counters so if used to get quite crowded some mornings

Would imagine it was gutted out, it has changed hands quite a few times that I am aware of.

There's a property listing for it at http://commercial.carterjonas.co.uk/pro ... eet__Leeds. Only one photo of the inside but it looks like a lot of original features are still there. It's grade II listed so hopefully they should remain.

Maybe that's the upstairs as it seems there are windows to the floor. even though that photo was taken a long time ago I am puzzled.
