When I was at school at Mt. St. Mary's in the 1940s I had a pal who lived in a row of houses facing the water and to get to them you went down steps by the Iron Bridge on South Accommodation Road. maybe I am looking in the wrong place but I can't see anything about the bridge on site.

According to Old Maps at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/431435 ... /13/101329 there's a row of houses called either Bridge View or John Eaton Street that overlooks the river. The site is long gone but Leodis has this photo of the bridge under construction with the houses in the background:

When I worked at Wallace Arnold at Donisthorpe Street in the mid 1960s we used to go to a transport cafe which was on the lower left of SAR just as what was presumably the bridge rose up and to the right - or rather the cafe was on the bit that dipped down. How those areas have altered since then and until reading this post I'd completely forgotten about that road layout of old .

would the old café have been dunhills the one with the long canteen tables,dam good transport café only spoiled by peter dunhill been such a miserable git.

Hi Snowman1 - yes, although I'd forgotten the name, Dunhill's it was indeed. Good grub and I seem to remember often seved by a polite enough but "no nonsense" well made lady of middle age ?? I seem to recall also that the lower level road passing the cafe was cobbled.

Hi BLAKEY i remember this cafe on the other side of the road was Bryant and Mays matches i think this cafe has been on here in the past i could be wrong it would not be the first time.

Directly across the road from Hunslet East goods yard, so I often went there in the late 1950s/early 60s. Good food, and an amazing variety of different jobs to be found amongst the clientele

Coming down SAR

If you wanted to go on the north side of the river you crossed the bridge and went down steel steps on the left.

If you wanted to go on the south side you went down concrete steps on the right hand side before the bridge.

My Pal George lived on the left hand side of the river as you went up South Accom. from Hunslet and I seem to remember going down steps and maybe going under the bridge to get to his place.as it is nearly 70 years ago my memory is not what it should be and that was a very bad time in my life. Funny that Bridge was painted green and though I crossed it nearly every day in my adult life I don't remember ever seeing it being painted.
