Scouring old Buslingthorpe brought up a two nice finds.

One is a brick embossed "W S" from either of Willam Sutcliffes clay pits at Armley (on Stanningley Road opposite the park or at Hunslet Carr at the bottom of Belle Isle road/Balm Road).

Then a mystery "RRB Co." which turns out the be the Red Rock Brick Company Leeds. But where were they? A search finds a comment on Leodis that the Rock Red Brick company (sic) was on Stoney rock lane opposite the cemetary.

I take it you mean the comment about threquarters through on this.

SPLAY=FULL Maybe someone with directories could clarify but the explanantion for "Rock Red Brick" as opposed to "Red Rock Brick" is to my eyes plausible especially if it was adjacent to Rock Beck and Rock Colliery. Afterall they were producing "red" bricks

"Rock Red Brick Co. Brick Manuf. Fraser Road. Tel 2005".
Not recorded in the 1914 or 1916 Directories.
The only other company [and this from the 1916 Directory] in the area which seems not to be associated or part of the Leeds Fireclay Co.is;
J & C Boyle at the Burmantofts Brick Works, St Stephens Street.

The chimneys are the famous Burmantofts Terra Cotta works and the abandoned land the flats are built around was and infilled Boyle's brickworks.

Boyle's clay pit and works (filled in) is on Tyke Bhoys piccy and Leodis carries fantastic pictures of the clay pit when it was at is height....sorry Liits depth.

Fraser Road was a short side street off Stoney Rock Lane of course and on the OS maps you can see the pits and kilns.

I thought it was Red Rock but thanks for the correction of Rock Red.

Do you have any entries for the Armley Brickworks one opposite the Armley Park the other below Armley Jail - just wondered who ran/owned which??

Found another belter today on the site of Golden Acre swimming pool - Marked J. G. & S. the record is that it was "made by John Garland & Son, Cherry Row, Leeds, listed in White's directories of 1861 and 1870"......

Anyone got easy access to these directories for listings of Brick manufacturers, don't want to put anyone out - I will get to the Library!!

A little update.. I only searched the 1908 Directory for Rock Red Brick in the alphabetical listing. A further check of Brick & Tile Manufacturers shows a bit more info

Pile of bricks opposite St. Hilda's all marked "WARD" these are from the brickworks on Clark Lane, which was East Leeds ground and passing today it's a school?
