I'm on holiday at the moment. Just watched man city v newcastle on Portuguese tv. In the run up to the game they used silhouettes of landmarks to 'label' he town. For nufc it was the angel of the North. wither the brick man? In its absence what would they use? Town hAll, civic hall, Dalek, broadcasting place?

There are plenty that are recognisable to Loiners but not to outsiders. Same with Manchester I suppose. I would say that Liverpools landmarks are probably the most recognisable outside London and Edingburgh.
I think it's to TV exposure to a degree, there really haven't been any Leeds based tv programs networked nationally since Queenies Castle.
Everything filmed in a Leeds for a tv program has been a fictitious location, think Frost and Denton the fictitious town.
As a result non specific Leeds buildings and landmarks are not used,so no one outside Leeds gets to see them on the TV and as a consequence are unable to identify anything particular or iconic relating to Leeds.

Apparently the TV and movie people love Leeds as the range of locations lend themselves to pretty much every eventuality.
That said, aside from the Town Hall and maybe the Parkinson Building I'm struggling to think of an iconic silhouette on the skyline. The layout of the city centre doesn't really lend itself to a sweeping panorama with the buildings lined up like some cities.

Obviously someone with little knowledge of Leeds though. Isn't Leeds Castle in the montage on several occasions you know the one hat about 250 miles away

DCI Banks was filmed in Leeds but the program is not SET in Leeds so most people outside Leeds do not know it is Leeds.
Until there is a nationwide syndicated/broadcast tv program or film set in a Leeds showing Leeds landmarks then we will not have the same impact in the nations collective conscience in the same way as the Angel of the North and the Tyne bridge represent Newcastle and the waterfront buildings represent Liverpool etc etc

Much to the annoyance of Gateshead.
