Hi. I'm new here and i'm really interested in this kind of thing. I'm Andrew 30 years old from Woodlesford! (sorry i did not know where to post a introduce myself post, please move )
I've lurked these forums many times and feel like i already know some of you

I'll get started by saying there is an old pit near my house and this is the old line still visible that lead from the old quarry that was once in the woodland on the right of the photo which lead to the pit which was way through to the woodland on the left.

there is still a few old walls and the like knocking around the woods, my grandad worked there long ago. There is some woods call Pitwood where i think the entrance may have been. There is also a old signal box near by which is well past its sell by date.

I'd really like to learn more about the city centre and its history and see some little gems. Think i'm in the right place!

Welcome to Secret Leeds. Sorry that I'm unable to help you about the railway lines and the area but I'm sure someone will know.

It's an interesting member name that you've picked as Lupus is wolf and Lupus alatus is winged wolf, so that's a

name.

Now then, that IS an interesting photo and although I know the area rerasonably well I just can't place the road or the railway track. There is a similar circumstance not too far from you, on the country road that leads from the A642, just south of the M62 junction, through to Watergate and Methley A639. At that location too the old track crosses the road between wooded areas either side and long ago there was a colliery there as well. In recent years there's been a bit of industrial building going on but I'm not sure what its all about. I haven't commuted daily from Headingley to Pontefract since I retired from the buses in May 2001 so only pass there very occasionally now.

Thanks Tabbycat. Looking at the Old Maps site, the pit certainly had its share of railway.

hi, thanks for all the replies i expected none. sorry for the late reply i just got back from work and went to bed after i posted last night.

Tabbycat you are correct with your location it's about 50metres up the lane where i live, there is quite a lot of interesting areas around Woodlesford and LS26 but new houseing projects do my head in. The quarry was on the right which you can see on a picture on here:

Its totally unrecognizable now as it was all filled in before my time and new woodland planted, its very nice these days dominated by dog walkers. The woodland on the left is very interesting, there are parts of the woods which just randomly have black patches filled with old slate.
when it rains the ditches run a bright orange water through them, the orange is tstrill there when dry, i think it may be something to do with the pit underneath but i can only find mixed info on it, its deffo not human waste drainage.

The woods on the right of Eshald lane show the quarry site on the left between the football pitches woods the pit entrance somewhere.

Also there is this about a mile down over the river, it was flooded years ago and is new fenced off becasue its "dangerous apparently" i'm not sure what it was, any help?

Your probably the only person to notice the name ever, i used to use it when i was a teenager playing video games i just stuck with it. I used to think i sounded smart using latin

just to the north of the white square, the housing estate that drops down like a tear right next to the canal was built in 1999, when i was young it was runins of a brewery and full of tunnels old building and glue sniffers. It use to be this brewery on the link
