Whilst it's actually within the 'WF' boundaries, it's probably close enough to be of interest to Secret Leeds-ersI'm not sure how many of you have recently seen the structural steelwork, that's been erected on the site of the old Newmarket Colliery, off Newmarket Lane (just to the Stanley side of jct30/M62)I saw it the other day, when I had cause (first time for a few months) to travel westbound on the M62, & passed itMy first assumption was that it was something to do with the sports-stadium that's supposedly being built thereA question on a FaceBook page, dealing with a village nearby, gave an answerhttp://

www.newcold.com/wakefield-uk Whilst reading this thread I somehow got transferred to
www.stanleyhistoryonline.com which has photos of Newmarket and Lofthouse collieries which brought back memories of the Lofthouse rescue (1973). I think it was on the 1st Saturday of the rescue, a small armoured conveyor (about 20-30ft long) was brought up to remove the debris, but it needed carrying over the pumps that were busy pumping the flood water (slurry) away. So myself and another fitter stripped the conveyor to carriable sizes and a group of volunteers from Newmarket Pit arrived to manhandle it over the pumps. Everyone of them seemed to be well over 6ft and I remember thinking I've never seen so many big men in one place. They manhandled the sections like they were paper mache. I suppose the cramped environment made them seem bigger. I realise the thread isn't about the pits but I hope you don't mind the reminisces the thread brought back.
