I think after having another look at the water tank pictures that they more likely on the land now occupied by the childrens centre.

Red marks the spot.
That was my impression when you first posted them, especially as you had dated Shaftsbury House as pre-war. What I did find strange was the lack of building on that triangle

What I will do tomorrow is trawl the Beeston Rd pics on Leodis as I'm sure they will cover the lower half and the only thing striking me about the Mosley picture is a) his tannoy speakers are forward facing only suggesting no surrounding audience or he is backed up to something and b) the roofline in the distance seems to be rising slightly.

Another point to add is that this was in 1936 so Shaftsbury House may not be in shot at any angle seeing as it was opened in 1938 although unsure when building work on it started.

Apart from that..

Clair You're barred!!!

The building that''s bugging me in the feast picture is the one furthest right in front of the tall chimney. Taller than the Cambrians, right location give or take for what was called at one point Hillside school but wrong orientation.

BAH!!
Yes I forgot that. Later maps show the school as somewhat L shaped with the front on Beeston Road and the other leg on the north(Cambrians) side. At least one older map shows it as I shaped running east-west. The date range on the NLS side by side maps make it difficult to tell when the Orientation changed. Given no Industrial buildings in the area the only logical explanation I think is the school.

Again I have to concur as it's the only logical choice.

Plus it has the makings of a facade and a stubby oversize chimney that looks right for a school boiler for example.

Close up I know but fits the bill for me re the unknown building far right on the feast picture.

I'm just wondering if both the side on and front of the school are merged in the silhouette. The round Chimneys in this Leodis picture are consistent with those on the feast picture
https://www.leodis.net/api/MediaRecord/ ... geSize=lge but they have gone in more recent pictures
Interestingly the 3 storey shop on the end of Kiln Steet looks taller than the school but that could just be optical illusion and/or completely out of shot

Again I'm in agreement Tykebhoy.

It's the old problem I'm afraid insofar as that which we are sure about still exists but that which is in doubt has gone.

The Kiln St photo does give food for thought or is it the photo angle effect which is something that always catches me out I have to say.
In the background I can also see what may be the Pheasant pub that stood there till the early 70's and in this pic looks as big as the school yet dwarfed by the shop which admittedly is a three storey building.

According to an entry on Leodis it would seem the chimney belongs to the mineral water works and not Henry Moore's tailoring as I first thought.
The chimney is seen in this picture of the Green man public house on Dewsbury Rd.

Entry from Leodis.

Updated Feast picture also.

Just to add a bit of confusion.

My reference to Highfield Mills Moore's tailoring etc was based on this map which shows the mill on the left hand side of lady Pit Lane where Moores were based.

However a second map seems to show Highfield Mills as being the premises of the mineral water works on the right of lady pit lane where the allotments now stand, so which one is correct?
