Hi, I was wondering if anyone here could help me. We live in a building called Stonegates in Meanwood. (I couldn't upload a picture as I'm a bit hopeless but you can see it here -
https://twitter.com/dedbutdrmng/status/ ... 32/photo/1 ) .We've been trying to find out a bit about the building and drawing a blank. A lot of 'it could be's' but not much else. The building is mid 1870's (or part of it is) but you can see from the picture it's clearly two different builds. Also, the front is Yorkshire stone but the back is red brick and slightly below the level of Stonegate Road, it's almost as if the back of it has been sliced off at some point to make way for the road. If anyone knows anything we'd be really interested to hear it. Thanks ever so much.

That does indeed look like it. Brilliant and thank you ever so much. Oddly, I grew up in a place called Crowther Avenue wonder if it was linked to the Crowthers mentioned there.Off to read more. That's today's work substantially set back.

Crikey, owned by Barker Crowther. Barker is my Surname. Though sadly as I read on I don't think it is the same place. Stonegates is on the corner of Stonegate Road and Stainbeck Lane, not near Moorfield House. Someone did mention it being a coaching house so it may have been that for a bigger house (However, my pic makes it look like a row of terraces and it's not, it's huge. I'm 6" and can't see in through the bay windows to the right of the picture.) If anyone remembers Westgarth Vet's Stonegates is across the road from it and if you were passing on Stonegate Road you'd think we were a disused warehouse form the back. It seems the building in the post is/was quite a bit further up.I would love to be living in Bacchus House.

Hope so. It's not a startlingly striking building like Meanwood Towers but it would be nice to find out something. It obviously has a history of changes and judging by our flat was most likely very grand before it was, rather crudely, cut up into flats.

!890 Map - Just to the LH of "Sunny Side"
http://tinyurl.com/katnmlv . On the Tithe maps (circa 1835 - 1850) the land is owned by Joseph Henry Oates & consists of "House ,Stable & Cottage"

That's it. Thanks. And from the map it looks like the bit we live in is the later addition (which we suspected). None of the outbuildings or the cottage are there anymore but I might have a bit of an explore into the wilder bits of the garden and see if I can find any ruins. I wonder who those people were and if it was the Oates' who extended it.Amazing job finding it. I wouldn't have the first idea where to start. (Clearly.)

I heard from one of the ex-staff that they received an offer on the building at a time when they were re-considering the future of the practice and it was just too good an offer to refuse. So, they closed the deal and the practice very quickly.
