This photo (which I took on September 7 2012) shows a very nice carving above the main door of Number 1 Dock Street. It looks as if it has been recently cleaned but in view of the 1698 date I think it is very unlikely to be original, as it would be very weathered despite being somewhat sheltered even if the building is original. It may of course be recent having been put there during the modernisation of the building to the apartments now there.

It was originally the offices of the Aire & Calder Navigation.

The Leeds badge is there of course, presumably for the Aire. The fleur-de-lys is the coat of arms of Wakefield so that I suppose is for the Calder. The white rose is obvious, as is the ship and 1698 must be the date of act of parliament, it certainly isnt the date the carving was made!!
