Having lived in Rawdon since 1993, i have only just discovered the joys of dog ownership and the great walks round Rawdon. If you go down warm lane ( behind the total garage on teh JCT600 roundabout) and down past Emsley's farm shop, the lane finishes at a gate under a railway bridge. This walk takes you into the woods behind Esholt treatment works. If you turn right, a long wide track takes you all the way to esholt village but most of it has a thick concrete slab running alongside it and some upright no longer used valves. This is a fair way from the works themselves. Does anyone know what was there?.

My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!

Thanks Phil, fast response!. i haven't seen that bit yet, looks awesome , where exactly is it?.The bit i am referring to is at what i call the "top" of the works on the Leeds side of the canal, directly down from the A65.The other pics on your flicr are stunning !.BTW having read about the alleged tunnels round Leeds, i had to laugh. When looking around the web, i came across a site called"Above Top Secret".The two threads that had me in stiches were:-Every uk military establishment is interconnected by secret underground tunnelsThere is a secret bunker as the bottom of Scammonden Dam Wall- UFOs allegedly use it!....Makes the Kirkstall tunnel story seem tame!

As far as I know the concrete channels carried effluent between the sewerage plant near the road at Applerley Bridge and the plant by the Canalside. The works are actually spread out quite a bit in that area and there's even the disused railway bridge over the canal. If you have a look on google maps, or similar , on a satellite view you'll see what I mean.

The Esholt site has seen a lot of changes over the years and more to come. Before it opened a sports car was driven through the tunnel from Bradford. The canal and the river running through the middle offer a few challenges and isn't something most sewage works have to factor in. I once gave a bunch of foreign engineers a tour of the the works ( a bad tour as they knew more about the processes than me) and they were gobsmacked by the location. One asked why we hadn't closed the canal. It's a site I'd like to know more about but our archives are a mess.

Hi Rich, not seen you on LRUK for a while. Cardiarms, do i asume you work for YW?.it is a huge place up there, it was just so starnge seeing teh line of concrete slabs with the old valves. I wondered if they were the base of old filter beds. There are also signs saying "danger no entry" but these seem to refer to nothing as there is only a wood on the other side.
