Only this week I've noticed two new red aircraft warning lights on the Leeds skyline. I'm just short of 5 miles away, but it looks like they are sited on top of Cottingley Towers. Can anyone confirm this, or have they always been there and I've not been very observant

Would these be the same two red lights I see when I am coming down York Road near the flyover. In the distance I see these lights and wonder where and what they are for.

Depending which part of York Road it was I think you would see the Towers yes Kate, especially up near Seacroft. I think Ravey has a photo from the site of the old Seacroft centre and you can see them, I also remember he set a quiz on what flats could be seen in the distance on the M621 by Cottingley Towers.

Obligatory on high structures in many areas. When and where is fairly complex and is determined by many factors including the obvious, proximity to airports/heliports, flight paths, buildings on higher terrain in such an area, and low flying craft may be encountered like police or ambulance helicopters. The most unexpected one I know of is 10km out at sea on a mast of some 60+ metres.

chameleonI can see the twinkling red light of my local Cookridge Tower. Doesn't really seem high up in these parts but it is.Does anyone have some kind of contour line map of leeds, coloured to show it's highest bits? I've got a height map of Yorkshire going from light green low/vale of York/ Hull up to dark brown high pennines.

That plus its close proximity to a Commercial airport which still takes light aircraft and I think helicopters would be plenty of reason for warning lights.Does google earth do a contour overlay? It certainly knows the elevation at any point.

Jogon - don't think GE does but in google maps, go to the drop-down menu top right and click terrain. This will add contours as you zoom in but they are not as clear as they might be.
