They was a fire and then in a bad state, so it was demolition time.

St Patrick's I can help you with (I was christened there).It fell victim to a falling congregation, plus the costs of upkeep / running such a large building, so it was closed and a new smaller church built on Torre Road next to the school.St Patrick's is now used by West Yorkshire Playhouse as a scenery workshop / store for sets. Apparently it's ideal for such things due to the cavernous interior.

ah ok so why were their 2 churches right next to each other?

St Patricks was RC - wasn't St Mary's an Anglican church? To expand, the area around there when the churches were built was also vastly different to what you see today - the whole area was densely packed with housing, in addition some industry, so there was a plentiful congregation for both churches to cater to. Plus in those days almost everybody went to church - religiously you might say... I'm sure there are other posters who can give more details on this than I can.

St Marys was St Peters "sister church" and was used for all the events ,such as Baptisms,marriages and burial services whilst the current St Peters church was being built 1838 and 1841.

Does West Yorkshire Playhouse rent St Pat's from the Catholic Church does anyone know? Or has the building been bought?
