The YEP yesterday reported that there is work going on at Oddy's Lock to replace two of the three lock gates. In order to do so the Leeds and Liverpool canal there has been drained. I had a look at the site today (Nov 25 2011) and the photo shows a view looking down into the drained part. Oddy's Lock is only a short walk upstream from Wellington Road Bridge. I would like to thank the workman who took time to let me get closer to the work and for the little chat we had.According to the YEP report Oddy's Lock is a Grade 2 listed structure that was built at the end of the 18th century. The YEP also said new lock gates have been made and "will be craned in next week, with repairs to the lock chamber wall also planned".

This photo (taken Dec 2 2011) shows a drained section of the canal with one of the recently installed new lock gates at Oddy's Lock. I would like to thank the workman who let me get closer to the work and for his friendly chat.

This photo (taken Dec 2 2011) shows the view in the opposite direction to the photo in my post immediately above. It shows another of the recently installed new wooden lock gates at Oddy's Lock.

Did you ask if they found anything interesting in the bottom of the lock - shooters / bodies etc?

There certainly did not seem to be as much as I had expected when I first saw the drained area on November 25. A few years back there was some work done at the lock near the Royal Armories and it was reported then that one surprise find were several goldfish that seemed to be surviving OK.

I believe goldfish aren't uncommon in canals around the country. They are pretty hardy with regards temperature and can survive winters. They also like calm water so canals suit, plus there are plenty of hiding places and not a lot of natural predators in canals. They can live into their twenties so can do really well in these conditions. Its good to hear the lack of rubbish in there too. The River Aire is a lot cleaner nowadays too. Ive seen a Kingfisher just near the train station so that's a good sign.Sorry if Ive gone off topic.

Cheers Spackler. Goldfishes in canals must be hardier than those I used to win at feasts when I was a kid as the poor things (the goldfish!) usually died in no time! Seeing the Kingfisher must have been a great surprise sighting and is, as you say, a good sign.
