looking at the cost of building Armley Gaol in 1845, £43,000. In 1992 the two new wings were added, including a new kitchen and medical centre, at a cost of £57 million. Compare this with the cost of building the prison less than one hundred and fifty years earlier - £43,000.    On 9 March 1989 sixteen bodies, having been exhumed from graves within the prison, where reburied in the local cemetery. This was to make way for the extension of two new wings that would cover the area where they had been buried.M Wright - Amley Gaol - Execution Era. 1864 to 1961..

That would be about £10m in today's money. I suspect labour was cheaper and life expectancy shorter.

I suppose you suggested that travelling on trains without a ticket was near the top of the list?

Regarding the bombing near to Armley Jail, the bombers were after the ammunition factories around Blakeys on Armley Road. Also Armley Train Station, as the ammunition went along that train line. Those prisoners would have three meals a day, tv, gym and be out in about 8 to 10 years nowadays. Born the wrong centuary.

I see your profile gives your occupation as "criminal". If you can't do the time don't do the crime. Best wishes for a long stay at the Leeds 12 one * hotel.

Mondays Daily Mail...
Smugglers are lobbing flaming socks over jail fences to burn holes in security netting - allowing drones to fly in and drop off packages stuffed with drugs & mobile phones.
The bizarre method is thought to have started at Leeds jail, but is now believed to be 'widespread' at prisons where security netting is installed to stop what are called "throw-overs".
The smuggler put a rock in a sock to weigh it down before setting fire to the sock & throwing it onto security netting. It is believed to be costing tens of thousands of pounds to replace the scorched netting. It also takes several months to repair the netting, meaning smugglers on the outside can more easily get their contraband through.
Speaking recently, Barrie Meakin, the chairman of the Independent Monitoring Board at HMP Leeds, said that the smugglers on the outside were acting under orders from inmates. To ensure the hole is big enough for a drone delivery or throw-over of contraband, several burning socks are usually thrown.
Mr Meakin said that no matter what prison bosses did to try and stop it, inmates would always look to 'find another way' to get drugs & phones in, adding 'The prisoners are certainly ingenious in their efforts to get drugs into the prison'.
A prison worker said security netting was increasinly being targeted, adding "it's getting harder for prisoners to brin in drugs due to more body scanners & a crackdown on mail being sent in soaked in liquid Spice ( a synthetic mind influencing drug). This has meant there are more throwovers or drone deliveries'.

I wonder if Warrington/Rhino could make one of his sketches of this?
