Not really sure which forum to put this in, but I guess my house is a building? Sorry if its in the wrong place!Basically, my house was built in 1890, and at some point the adjacent land was bought (from the commonwealth bank of australia I believe). There is a low wall which divides the house garden and this extra land.Given that the walls surrounding this land are "railway type", the concrete posts with concrete panels type and the house backs onto the railway I assumed this was railway land, however, there is a stone wall at the back (top of the cutting) which would prevent access to the tracks?I've dug a lot of cut stone and coping from the garden, suggesting this wall used to be at the front as well. Now, early maps show a closed in yard type area, which is not unbelievable, but i'm wondering for what purpose? However, the Russian 1972 map of Leeds shows some kind of bridge crossing the railway pretty much parallel with this land. a black line crosses this bridge. I did wonder if it was power lines as the after the bridge, the line appears to pass over the substation, but the line appears to cross houses willy nilly, and appears to be a contour line on the map!Any other suggestions? Leodis doesn't have anything for Conference road and I'm drawing a blank!Jim

Hi Meehaja. The apparent "bridge" crossing the lines to my old school on the Russian map (two parallel lines at right angles to the track) can be seen repeating at more or less equal intervals along the track. I would surmise that they are to measure distance along the railway and do not indicate actual structures -unless they coincide with mile and quarter mile posts. The faint brown line apparently crossing the non existent bridge (trust me, I spent my breaks and dinner times train watching from the other side of the railway until the diesels started to run the Bradford trains in 1954!)are, as you surmise, contour lines.

Sorry BJF, the 1972 Russian maps are amongst those available on the old-maps website.
