Hello, I'm new here to secret Leeds. I'm looking for info on Haymount St in Newtown Leeds.
The 1911 census has my Great Great Grandfather John Clayton living at 19 Haymount St. He had a fish and chip business somewhere near by
Other family members that would have also lived there were Selina Clayton, Mabel Clayton, George Clayton, William Henry Clayton and Minnie Clayton.
Any info would be appreciated
I lived across the road from Haymount St until about 1963 Aged about 17

There are many photos on Leodis including the addresses provided by Uncle Mick.

I have no recollection of a fish and chip shop at all.

The 1958 photo of 46.Lincoln Field Row shows a much neglected building even compared to other houses
in the slum clearance area.

The name Clayton does not ring any bells either

My Grandparents and mother lived at 12 Haymount Street, Mum related a story when in the mid thirties she was given a kitten by the local fish and chip shop owners. She said her Dad pulled her leg about the colouring of the kitten so took it back, saying they could have it back as it had trousers on it! just missed the hot chip pan when the lady caught it.
This chip shop was on the corner of Haymount Street (Side was a blank wall) with the frontage on Lincoln Field Row.
I lived at 9 Hill Side Street in the fifties, and still seem to remember a chippies in that same place. I can find a photo of the blank wall, but not the frontage, but believe it would have faced a grocers (Slaters?)

Shopped in Slaters many times, always stuck me as a very clean shop, probably
because I seem to remember then wearing white coats.

Still no recollection of the chippy,we always used Tat's on Robson St

Thinking of my time in Newtown up to the age of 7, I seem to think there was a large van which parked up on the streets and showed religious films from the back, with all us children sat on the cobbles watching.
One of the films was very frightening, so never went back after that.
Perhaps we were considered ungodly to need this, although most kids I knew went to St John's (church school) .
Does anyone else remember this van or am I just imagining this?

Great stuff as usual Mick.....

My great great Grandma lived in Haymount "Buildings" which I got from her death certificate. An unusual address.

It was a joy to eventually see Leodis put out pictures of the Haymounts, but a disappointment that the address Haymount Buildings was "not found".

I can only guess it was some sort of hostel? Do you have anything for this?

Looking at the 1911 Census it doesn't appear to be an hostel but a block of houses. I would hazard a guess it was this block on the map that is not named
