In tonights EP mentions a number of RC Churches in Leeds are closing with parishes being reduced in number. Mentions that a number will become "Chapels of Ease" - I've not heard of that expression before - seems it's a non-parish church used to avoid travelling to the main church. There's a few here I'ver never heard of! - St Urban, Holy Rosary?http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... 762.jpI've heard that some of the remaining ones may change names.    

St Urban is on Grove Lane and Holy Rosary is on Chapeltown Road.Regards.

As I understand things there are basic problems,A shortage of priests,high maintence costs and more to the point falling congregations.no staff.high costslack of interest.The dearth of most of the Christian religions recently.I am not a Catholic but my wife is,a good parish priest canwork wonders,sadly many do not aspire to this.

As far as I am aware, the Churches will keep their names but the 'parish' for the collective churches will also have a name. For example, in East Leeds, St Gregory's, St Theresa's and Corpus Christi will become 'The Blessed John Henry Newman Parish".

The Priest comes from somewhere else in the Diocese as required.One can even be set up for an hour or two in a Church of a different denomination, a parish hall, or even a room in a pub

The Chapel at Killingbeck Cemetery is, or was, a Chapel of Ease.

It's interesting looking at old maps that around 1900 every few streets seem to have their own church (and pub!) I wonder that the OS maps of 2100, 2200 will look like - will there be a mosque on every corner or will new religions appear?

I presume that will change if he is made a saint! - which I believed would happen when the pope visits
