There's no fun now there's no Fred Dibnah style plunger moment. Not the "Get Carter" car park - I would have thought that this was a listed building!

As Raveydavey has put it, it'll be just relocation for a lot of new tenants in the centre. What would set this apart would be if we didn't get the same set of carbon copy stores moving in, but a mixture of speciality shops and the chains. If you just have the same shops abiet them in a different order you could be anywhere - Meadowhall, Metro Centre, Trafford Park....Before they knocked it down, there was a reasonable selection of specialist places as well as the odd pound shop, and I doubt if we'd get the same selection.I don't however think that anything is going to happen with the "Harewood Quarter" for a very long time. May I suggest they give up on yet more shops and let's have a decent car park and I want the Lucky Dragon back (or rather my other half does). Let's have a Wing Yip but then I'd never get her out of the place.I can agree with the comments about the "Core" - it's awful!

I agree with all the negative comments about "The Core" - what other commenets COULD theire be ?? I actually thought the World of the previous place with its dignified green and gold trimmings and lifts and stairs and a truly useful selection of "proper" shops and eateries. I think Mr. Snowdon Schofield would have approved of it, but I hate to think what he feels now as he looks down at the present bland disaster on his old site.

It didn't get its listing in the end because it was in such a poor state - the concrete is rotting and it was a danger to passers-by. I doubt the new Tescos will survive as long though.

The Chinese was awsome and dirt cheap. This facility has not been replaced at all and I think if they did open something similar then they would get footfall and therefore trade.

I always found that where ever I was, I had to wlk past all the shops that didn't interest me to reach a means of travelling in the direction I next wished to go. Subtle marketing ploy of course but was a enough to reduce my visits to passing through the doors to get from one side to the other and out again!

According to one of the Get Carter websites, the 'mix' of the concrete was wrong and it's been on borrowed time ever since it opened. The restaurant that Alf Roberts was going to open at the top shut years ago because of related problems and there have been instances of chunks of concrete falling off it.In the base of the car park was a shopping centre / market that had a lot of similarities with Seacroft Centre (see seperate thread) which shouldn't be too surprising as they were built at around the same time and in the same style.I think the whole place has been shut up for a couple of years now and I'd thought it had gone. If I'd known it was still there I'd have nipped over when I was in the North East in May.

I try to avoid using public toilets but I occassionally used that which was close by the old food court. It did though always smell awful and its 3 very close to each other urinals made you use one and get away as fast as possible! I don't know if there are toilets in the Core. There are in The Light complex but they are not free and in the couple or so times I have used them they also stunk!

I think only the top two floors were closed to the public then. I got a few Carter location shots while i was up therehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/sets/7 ... 59/detail/

Much as it's become an icon, and a classic example of the Brutalist school of architecture, the Get Carter car park is no fun to look at on a daily basis and I really will be glad to see it go. Not that I'm looking forward to Tescopolis, but the plan is for a lot of student accommodation as well as retail etc.. At least there'll be employment for construction workers, albeit fairly short term. What happens after that remains to be seen. Students = takeaways. Not that the High Street is short of them.
