SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

Has anything been covered on here about the 'Chinatown' area which is now mainly derelict around the Templar named streets? Just wondering if this was ever a thriving area of Leeds.

It was a mix of back to backs and manufacturing. The Chapel has been covered on here. The Eastern edge was bounded by Lady Beck (now culverted) but Bridge Road hints at the history. Prior to the construction of Eastgate and the Headro Lady Lane was the route down to the York Road. And the old red bus station has been the subject of many a wistful comment. Have you tried Leodis for pics? As for 'China Town'. My *rs*! ;-DAny particular interest?

We've had bits on everything there from the Thornton's factory, thriough bricked-up openings in remaining wallls, to the old West Yorkshire \bus Station but alas, burried in as many different threads! Lots here though if time permits a search - or maybe time to revisit.....

If any of us were halfway clever enough we really should have some sort of google map that we could tag threads, individual posts and leodic pics to.

The Lucky Dragon is sorely missed, having been dragged into there by the wifey's side of the family, and then downstairs for the supermarket of course. Many happy hours I've spent waiting for her stocking up the larder and the takeaway's stocks.With the "Harewood Quarter" plans on ice, it's going to be a long time until anything happens in this area.The Chinese quarter has effectively moved up towards Vicar Lane, with the supermarkets, restaurants and the travel agent up there now.

Search in this application format is pretty dire on a good day, but yes, if memory fails, your lost.More annoying is knowing it's there but not finding it - even the difference between the singular and plural stuffs it up

Apparently Leeds' twin city gifted us with a chinese archway for chinatown about ten years ago, which has been in storage somewhere ever since. Bit of an embarassment and almost a diplomatic incident, by all accounts.

Perhaps it's a case of "Build it and they will come". So 'up the arch'!

You'd be amazed what little businesses would spring up.Also be good to have some Triads to add a bit of Eastern glamour to our criminal underbelly. much better than our Chav heavy drug scum.
