Wandering about where cars don't go Springfield Mount in Woodhouse has a massive ex-theologian building called The Priory - very impressive piece of gothic architecture!Wandering in the less celubrious area 34 Lupton St, off Midland Road Hunslet is/was quite a building but anyone know what it originally was?????

Unfortunately, on the 1908 OS map, there is just a blank space - no buildings shown. Behind is St Mary's church and an unnamed school. Opposite are buildings (and a chimney) associated with the Midland Railway sidings.

[If there’s a picture above then SL is working properly]Here’s a shot from Google Earth overlaid on the 1908 map. Si is right that there is just open ground behind the school [St Mary’s National School]. The building is now called Stringer House and houses the offices of West Yorkshire Community Accounting Services – something to do with the voluntary sector. I’d hazard a guess that it was once school premises itself but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Portland stone ornamentation is relatively recent. If you have a look at the building on Street View, it screams “School”. It may well have been a replacement for the school building shown on the 1908 map and has in its turn been replaced by the more modern, current building.Lupton Street doesn’t show up much in the trade directories. Although it shows on the 1908 map, it doesn’t have a listing in the 1908 Kelly’s.The 1916 edition lists only the Leeds Phosphate Works and Scott Walters steel manufacturers, while the 1947 edition shows W&H Wilson Gas Engineers and Overend & Co. Non-ferrous wire manufacturers.

You can just see the edge of the building on this Leodis picture:
http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... _6779116It looks more like Works offices to me, where the accountants and managers hid. Curious that it has no grand front door though, just two modest ones, unless it's been altered. The arial views suggest a central hall possibly? Design offices, draughtsmen etc?

In the directories that I have to hand, I've listed all that there is. I know it seems odd, but Lupton street seems to be a bit of an un-place. [and I still can't post the picture. If you want me to email it to you, I can].
