SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

O.K. - I don't profess to knowing its name or even if it is a commercial or residental building but, has anyone noticed that the newly built circular tower on the South side of the railway in Holbeck looks as if it has been badly put together.Every few floors as you go up, the sections seem to turn a few degrees so that the next window up is slightly out of line with the one below, it give the appearence of having been built out of large circular sections that have not been quite lined up properly.Of course I appreciate this will have been the intention in some sort of arty - farty designers brain but it just makes it look rediculous in my mind.

The building is apartments on the old Granary Wharf car park.It does look like each section needs twisting slightly so it lines up.It reminds me of some sort of rubik puzzle.Here's a link to a picture of the building work when it 1st started (foranyone who's interested !!!)http://www.flickr.com/photos/slw74/2351 ... 5181/There are some other photo's in the set of the building work progressing.You might have to copy and paste the address !    

Its called Candle House and its all apartments by the look of it. And yes its not a pretty sight, they have even put some horrible looking granite type blocks on the old canal bridge, I know its been tarmaced for a while but it used to be beautiful cobbles underneath.CANDLE HOUSEWith its elegant cylindrical shape, Candle House makes a bold statement on the Leeds skyline and re-establishes Granary Wharf as a landmark location. I like it , I must be odd !Its not like the old days when the River stank and you might get the odd dodgy garage hidden in the arches though!

We've had numerous 20(ish) stories of spacious living for many decades now, but call them council flats and no-one wants to live in them.......You can see it most of the way down the M621 from Gildersome.At least it's something different as opposed to the generic blocks flung up elsewhere - it looks a bit like a smoothed out version of the never actually built "Spiracle" - remember that?

Looked at this building from several sides now and I have realised that, intentional or not, no matter where you view it from the effect appears to make it lean to the left.Either an accidental side effect or a clever optical illusion - you decide.

Leaning Tower of Holbeck doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
