British Oxygen - BOC

A lot of demolition work happened at the Gelderd Road site during summer 2009, mostly to the rear of the site. More recently, the roadside buildings have gone, and builders are now in. Looks like a major redevelopment going on, but not much in the way of information on display.BOC has been at this location on Gelderd Road (near the old Wally Arnold depot) for as long as I can remember. The old red-on-white BOC sign is now gone. Anyone know what's going on?

I don't know about what's going up but you tend to hope it's not yet another "exciting" new office development to sit empty like the ones over the road. If there's any modicum of sense in the hallowed halls of Leeds council you'd think they'd do some upgrading to that bottleneck junction before someone does start building. There's been that much pulled down on that stretch of Gelderd road you tend not to notice another building gone anymore.

Weren't BOC bought out by a foreign firm a couple of years ago?In the days before 'elf n safety we used to go pick up gas bottles from there in a van, with an apprentice sat in the back for the short journey back to stop them rolling about....the mind boggles!

BOC was taken over by Linde Group a few years ago. Their trade outlets would appear to be third party so the one on Gelderd Road is owned by a local business, which probably means that BOC is rebranding and the sign is being replaced.

We get a delivery from BOC three times a week (Pinderfields Hospital) & they now drive from (I think it's) Grimsby, or Immingham.Some of the drivers did work out of Gelderd Road before it shut down, a couple took the opportunity for voluntary redundancy.I do know that if the order is messed up & we need an 'Emergency Delivery', it costs us over £300

BOC is expanding its retail business with the launching of a new ‘BOC Gas and Gear’ flagship store in Gelderd Road, Leeds – only the third of its kind in the UK.The 1.6 acre site brings three BOC operations together in one central location. As well as the superstore, there is a transport depot – the main centre for Yorkshire – offices and a conference room. The new facility replaces the old BOC outlet and carries the full range of BOC products and services – everything from work wear and personal protective equipment to gas and welding equipment, industrial products and power/hand tools – along with a ‘try before you buy’ demo room. The new Gas & Gear superstore, (which is wholly BOC owned - as are the other 70+ Gas & Gear/Tradequip stores in the network) , is open to both the trade and general public.

Nice to see some of this site is being put to good use BOC has been here a very long time. We used to go there when i worked for the Gas Board in 1965-1967
