SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

Hi everyone and thanks for all the info I've learned over the past year or so since I discvoered this site. I've finally joined up so I might be able to add my twopenneth, compared with all the knowledge already on here it is only twopenneth an all!!!!!.One other thing, I am in posession of a near complete set (only 5 or 6 missing) of late 1800's Ordinance survey maps of Leeds, they are very large scale and show where every street lamp, manhole, bollard etc... tramlines, even the bay windows of terrace houses!!!!!!. A lot of pubs are named, along with hotels and the larger houses, the town centre ones are amazing, esp Briggate area with all the yards named and in very large detail, I have used the maps to replicate the angles that pictures on Leodis were taken at and the wall lamps street grates etc line up perfectly.They are quite large, over 100 of them and they are on a hessian backed type of paper, very strong, some are very clean and some are a bit dusty.I now need to find another home for them, I would like them to go to somebody who will treasure them and get pleasure like I have done, does anyone know what they are worth? Any body who would like them please make me an offer, get in touch. I can send sample by email as i have a few of them scanned.

See if the Library in town will buy them off you. Or the Council, auction them you'll get the best price there maybe.

Hi Billy - you are indeed a very lucky chap, probably more so than you think - there are many on here and elsewhere who would 'die' for even some of these.Can't be sure from what you say, but could the fabric actually be linen rather than simply a a hessian-backed paper - that would make them akin to cartographer's masters perhaps, but maybe they are just copies made to endure llife.I for one would love to have them but for two points - I doubt I could afford their possible worth and, the thought that it would be wonderful if something like this could be made available for many to enjoy. If you consider the latter thought as an option, I suspect the West Yorkshire Archives in Sheepscar would love to have them. Do let us know how thing progress.    

Thank you for your replies, I have seen some similar maps in the Leeds Library, they are 1 to 500 scale, If there is ever a meeting between members of this site in the leeds area I would certainly bring along a few of the town centre ones for you to have a gannda, they are really interesting, If they were goin to someone to cherrish and have the ability and contacts to share with other local history anoraks like myself I was thinking about maybe £150 quidish or offer? does that sound a bit too much?anyway thanks again.

May I suggest that the library or official archive may have beaurocratic difficulty paying you for the maps.I think that all the people on here who would like to have access to these maps would be happy to divvy up a few quid each and between several of us we can easily meet in a gentlemans agreement your kind offer of a sale at £150 plus a "sweetener"?? Plus when we shake hands and give you the dosh we'll buy the beer?????I'm in - anyone else in?????????

I'm not sure of the best way to do it but it would be great if they were free to view. Get Leodis to scan them? The OS may have copyright issues though.

what about donating them to the library in your name so the can have them for posterity? I'm sure if you do want some cash for them rather tyhan just giving them away, if we all gave you a couple of quid then they could live at central library so everyone can look at them whenever.P.S. Wonder if Crown Court is on there and they are maps we haven't seen (skulls etc etc!!!)
