Don't know what the present thinking is but like the rest of the Trinity site, left to decay for several years awaiting the start over the road and to become part of it, with a covered Mall over Bribggate. Likely to be an eyesore for some time now.

The Market Street Arcade was always a completely "characterless" idea even when built, and must now take the gold medal for the foulest short cut in the city. Also the Corn Exchange frontal pavement area and Duncan Street (south side), by the "Duncan" and the betting shop and the long derelict hairdresser's shop, are enough to send any visitors straight back to their coaches or trains.     

Whilst the Market Street Arcade is awful, historically Market Street which stood on the site is of immense importance. This is where the Chartist newspaper the Northern Star was published for several years and Frederick Engels visited the office in 1843. There is a campaign to get a blue plaque erected once the arcade is redeveloped.

That is most interesting thank you - to be honest I had no knowledge of any previous notability for the street - as our stern old history master used to write in my reports "must try harder."

I never knew that - although I still agree with Blakey that the arcade now is probably the grottiest part of the city centre. There is nothing at all of merit about it at the moment.
