SOVEREIGN STREET LEEDS BUS SERVICES

Have been trying to post this reply to Trojan and Si in the thread about non LCT buses in Leeds, but there appears to be some sudden server problem - so I hope it gets through from this angleSorry gentlemen but I've just replied to one or other of you about Sovereign Street, and when I pressed submit a most threatening and puzzling internet page in yellow and red appeared full of scientific date way beyond me, and now I can't get that particular post of your's back.Anyway, here goes with another try Sovereign Street was a hive of WR/YWD activity in those heady days.The Overton and Netherton services were 16/17 and, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think they were exclusively West Riding ??YWD 36 was splendid for Wide Lane Morley - I often used that, and survived the awful beating you suffered on the dreadful chassisless Leyland Olympics which were supposed to be the tops at that time !!There was also YWD service 1 to Dewsbury.Plus the oft forgotten nowadays YWD/Leeds City Transport joint 55 service to Bruntcliffe.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

The bus service I and you missed (geddit) was the no 50, run jointly by West Riding and Yorkshire Woollen. It ran from Sovereign St. up Dewsbury Road to Tingley Cross Roads, then left on the A650, right on Smithy Lane, right on Westerton Road, left on Haigh Moor Road, right on Batley Road, right on to Baghill Road then along Rein Road, Bridge Street, though the centre of Morley to Gildersome via the Ingle estate, through Gildersome to the Woodcock at New Farnley, where it terminated. I lived at West Ardsley at the time (late 60's) and used this service a lot as I worked at Gildersome. The 7-.30 am was always a YWD, and the 6-00 pm from Gildersome was always a West Riding.

Thank you Trojan - I had completely forgotten about the number 50 "Westerton" after all these years. When I have chance I like to dip into the very first huge detailed "Metro" timetables from April 1974 (in fact far too detailed to be kept up to date - they practically told you what colour vests the conductore would be wearing). They do remind us now though of many fascinating routes and schedules.

I lived at Drighlington in the late 60's and my eldest son was born at Dewsbury maternity Hospital.Having no car in those days,when I wanted to visit my wife and new-born son I would catch a YWD bus at the terminus on Adwalton Moor, which was just at the end of the street I lived on. I think the bus was no.103 but not certain on this.It would drop me off in Dewsbury and I could walk up to the hospital.It seemed to take forever to get there.I seem to remember it was a 2 hourly service/
