SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

I know that there is a thread of F&C shops where Nash's is mentioned, but does anyone know when Nash's Tudor Restaurant on Merrion St. closed? I remember going to it with my grandmother in the 60s & thinking it wonderful with waitresses in neat black & white outfits. The building is still there and the signs are still up at the back entrance. I know the F&C shop is till open up Harrogate Rd.

I think it closed about 5/6 years ago. It always puzzled me as to why, Bryans is still thriving as is Bretts.

Is the one up Harrogate Road the same as the one that was in town?I always remember my grandpa telling me that in the 20's when he was an apprentice tailor he used to get sent to the fish shop to get lunch for people. There was another fish shop at the bottom of Merrion Street that was always quiter than Nash's so although he had specific instructuions to go to Nashs he though he'd avoid the queue and go to the quiter one. Got a serious bollocking whern he got back becasue they could all tell that he'd gone to the wrong one!!

Such a shame that the place shut down. Mi mam used to take me there for special treats and I loved the place. It still holds fond memories for me.

In the 70's it was the first time I'd ever sat down and had fish and chips on a plate with lemon and peas with a bit pot of tea and slices of butterd bread. Heaven.

Well it closed before September '07, when I moved to Leeds & one of the first things to do was find where the decent chippys were

I am certain though that it finally closed perhaps three or four years ago. Just before closing it was sold (but name remained the same I think) to someone from Castleford who "re-jigged it" into some kind of a zany bargain place with a much cheaper menu and "kids eat free" etc etc. It lasted only a very few months after that.Amazingly I paused only this morning to look at it, all untidily boarded up, with sadness and at the three shops attached to it which are in one awful state. The top shop was at one time a farm food shop for fresh eggs etc from Bramhope, run by a very elderly lady and her son who were prosecuted in a blaze of publicity many years ago for extreme cruelty to the hens at their Bramhope premises. As I reflected on the past, this morning can you believe, a car pulled up and with great difficulty a very very old lady scarcely able to walk a few steps got out and struggled into the closed and neglected shop - yes it was the same lady, wearing the same hat which was a feature of shopping in Merrion Street for so many years - how's that for nostalgia ??

Nashes used to run a series of Christmas dinner dances many years ago - I went to one - must be nearly forty years ago though.
