SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

I have been meaning to ask this for ages as I go past the place every morning and night on the bus.Why are the 3 buildings off South Accomodation Road and Hunslet Road called Angels Wing I, II & III? I know each one has a great big Angel blowing a trumpet in the entrance .Was this a former hospital or what?

there was never a hospital there, those buidings used to be a used car sales room (if memory serves i pass it too ever day) before they became Angles wing, what they were before that i dont know, but they look turn of the century to me (maybe something to do with the hunslet engine works just round the corner maybe) but my little nephew insists some dr evil type super villain and his organisation bent on world domination is based in there, as he puts it "why else have the silly name"

The website of Union Industries, who own the buildings, says that the company purchased two former chapels next to their original Lion Works factory, in the 1980s. One was renamed Dreadnought Works and the other Angels' Wing. The angel sculptures were originally designed for The Glory of Venice Exhibition at The Royal Academy by the same film prop company used by the Indiana Jones movies.

Whe it was still part of Union Industries that place was fascinating, still had the old coal fires in there, it was like stepping back 100 years when you walked in the door.
