Been reading the many threads RE LCT BusesI worked out of Sov around 1970 mainly on number 8,12 18/19 or any other route that passed through central Leeds because as you well know you started as aspare until you got your regular.I have many brilliant tales to tell as a guard ( I never did pass my test)One instance that springs to mind was when a Guard called MickConolly gave out Green Shield Stamps to the pensioners on the first Half Fare (after 10 Oclock from the terminus) at Moortown.Telling the passengers not to forget to ask the Conductor on their return journey for their stamps,I was one of those Guards that got asked and believe me it wasn't funny at the time.To say our Moortown friends weren't happy is an understatement.

Oh that's cheered me up no end - I was at Headingley then, and Sovereign Street as a spare inspector occasionally and I can certainly vouch for the Green Shield stamps fiasco.Among many hilarious tales as One Person Operation approached 100% and conductors who didn't really want to drive, or who would have been unsuitable to be in charge of a high powered wheel barrow, were actively encouraged to try their best to pass. One very senior chap at Torre Road, a really nice guy who'd long ago had many many weeks in the driving school without success did do his best and eventually it was deemed that with luck on a really good day he might just pass the test. The tale has it that the test was going reasonably well as they travelled from Whitkirk down Selby Road when the examiner suddenly rapped out "What was the last sign you've just passed." Our valiant candidate confidently replied "Fresh strawberries - pick your own - 2/6 a punnet" - and ended his days - as a conductor !!
