It was perfect for 1940, 50, 60's public transport (one car if you were lucky). No good now I like the outdoor bit for fruit 'n veg but ur right-you have to watch what they sell you or you could get stiffed.I got a bag of satsumas last week. When I got home they were all jeffs. Not the ones at the front of the stall. All the tat is out of sight and they mix it in sometimes.Just be careful what you buy and when.Early am is usually bad.Best bargains are around 4pm.....I got a 4kg bag of fresh onions for a lewis (£1) on Friday aft.If they let you,try and pick your own but a word of warning-some of the traders turn the air blue if you start "fiddling about" with their produce.Just be decisive, pick what you want straightaway 'n they're usually OK !

I feel awful for having made my previous scathing review of Leeds' Kirkgate Market. Although 90% of what I say, as much as I hate to admit it is true. In recent months I've tried shopping in the market a bit more and with a bit of trial and error shopping and following up on other peoples recommendations I have found a few redeeming features about the market. On Thursdays the outdoor 'second-hand' market while still looking tired and in need of revitalisation, can still be a place to pick up a good bargain as I've found out on the odd occasion - but thats just finding one item from all the second-hand stalls in a few weeks of looking. Also on the Thursday outdoor market there is a stall that sells absolutely delicious 'home-made' biscuits which are sold loose, and there is a great variety and they are brilliant value so I've started buying them regularly (probably why I've put on 1/2 a stone!).Additionally the outdoor fruit and veg sellers do offer some great value and as long as you shop around and check what you are been given can be an excellent, cheap source of a wide range of fruit and veg. Inside the market I've found a few stalls where you can buy some very cheap branded products which are a fraction of supermarkets prices - even when compared to the 'buy one get one free' offers. For example I recently bought 2 enormous bars of Galaxy chocolate for £1! The same bars cost £2.66 EACH in the Co-op. Plus I found large bags of KP dry-roasted peanuts for 2 for £1 when they are usually nearly £2 EACH in Sainsburys. And I found another stall where if you go early enough has 2 x Hovis sliced loafs (800g) for £1 which is less than 1/4 of standard price. One of the best bargains I found was 2 x 500g tubs of Utterly Butterly for £1!! Similarly thats about a 1/4 of the price as seen in most supermarkets. And my favorite buy is from the first seller on the left at the bottom of the fish market aisle (as you look up towards Vicar Lane) and he sells these packs of bacon which are approximately 1kg - for £1.50! The bacon is a mixture of sliced along with half the weight in large thick chops, but as I can slice it myself this isnt a problem. This bacon is some of the nicest I've EVER had, really, its very dry, so no added water, it cooks in no time at all, and its smoked which I absolutely love!So along with my 'home-made' biscuits and bacon sandwiches for breakfast dinner and tea, and other assorted bargains, I have everything a growing lad could need! The only thing is you arent guaranteed to be able to get any of these things all on the same day, or at all, its just a case of shopping around and maybe having to buy an alternative. Anyway I've said my piece now, so the market has been slightly reprieved in my eyes... happy shopping!

3 for £1 Maltloafs always seem popular, short dated but freeze ok.I used the Halifax market once for veg, very poor quality and expensive but it was either that or Tesco (nope!). Veg guys in Leeds at bottom nearest the bus station seem best for me, my only problem is I always seem to order too much but again it all freezes ok.
