LS1 - I know that time plays tricks with our "definite" memories, but I'm just amazed from the last picture to see that Eastgate was incomplete as late as 1955. I was in the RAF on National Service at the time and I find this reminder just astonishing !!

If you looked left whilst walking down Eaastgate at that time you could see across to the West Yorks Bus station and as far as Templar st. The Thorntons toffee factory with its lovely smells was also still there (i think)

Not sure Cardi, i think probably the latter. That side of Eastgate up to the Templar pub is for phase 2 of the project. Prior to its construction there will be some demolition to make a car park, the parking spaces being for what has been lost on George Street/ back of Millgarth. There has been a re think about phase 2, originally it was to incorporate some apartment element, then after teh crash taht aspect was scrapped. Now, with the town centre properties fully let i wonder if they will introduce the accomadation element back into it. I hope so as this will add to the city centre at this end of town. There was also going to be a huge M&S on phase 2, adjoining to the Ring Road. This was to be the main anchor store for phase 2.I would think that they will want to see how phase 1 progresses with letting etc. There was a date talked for phase 2 of 2019 start

The WYRCC bus station, doubled in size later in its existence, remained in use until 1990 ish and then became a car park, but is now out of use altogether in some connection or other with the Victoria Quarter future plans.

The Lyons building is getting a reprieve from demolition for parking with the possibility of permanant retention within phase 2 of VG.Good news for those who admire the building, though i have to confess im a little puzzled as to those who admire it for what it is.

Passing by today (June 27 2014) I took this photo when I noticed that demolition has recently started at the Harewood Street/Union Street junction of the row of buildings that front Eastgate. The hoardings round the whole of the Victoria Gate site do though make it very hard to get good photos. As a comparison I have recentlyish posted some photos in the 'Pubs closing now - in our time' thread when demolition had started at the far end at what was Hoagy's bar.

I wonder when Millgarth is empty pending its demolition if there may be a chance to take photos inside Millgarth.
