My Dad worked here in the early Seventies, having moved from Kitchen's on Meanwood Road when the two firms joined [Christmas parties were good]. He also worked at Miers [Pittards], and Stead's Tannery at Sheepscar. If it's any reassurance, Stead's is still flying the flag. I, too, would be interested in any photos, but I am especially interested in what became of the plaques and war memorials when these sites were torn down or redeveloped.RegardsDave Here is a photo from the Morley Photos book. I think that the office block is still standing so any memorials are possibly still inside.

There does not seem to be a photo in this thread that shows the now cleared area where Balmforth's was so I thought it would be of interest to post one. The photo was taken on October 7 2011. The site was cleared up many months back now but only fairly recently has a sign gone up stating that the site has been acquired. The wall with what looks like bricked up windows is on one side of Meanwood Beck that is not culverted for a short distance there. I will post a photo looking into the beck there in my next post.

This is the photo taken on October 7 2011 that shows most of the short stretch of Meanwood Beck that is not culverted at the Balmforth's site. My post above mentions the bricked up windows that remain in the beck wall, but this photo does not show them well. There are a couple of photos in Phill dvsn's 'Underground Leeds - A virtual tour' that were taken inside the open stretch there and one of them shows well the bricked up windows that were so low down they were probably bricked up very early on to stop water entering when the flow in the beck was high. For those who are unaware of it, Phill's superb thread is in the 'Underground streets, tunnels, culverts' section.

That's a good angle shot Leodian, and maybe one I should include on my underground trip under Leeds. That part of the beck was good for photos before they knocked Balmforth's down, the building at the back was very neglected and photogenic. I also had the run in with the over friendly Rat in that tunnel you see, I just caught glimpse of it about 2 inches away from my knee, It was going to give it a good sniff when I was kneeling down setting up a shot! The language was rather colourful I can say
My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!

You are welcome to use the photo. PS. You state 'The language was rather colourful I can say '. No doubt the rat was thinking something similar when it realised it was not going to get a fresh meal.

With reference to the comments re Ingles Tannery Churwell .If you go to britainfromabove (highly recommended great photos and free) do a search on Churwell about 10 views of Ingles Tannery are there 1950 . Although I was born within 3 good spitting distances of Ingles never realised how big it was till you see these pictures . From the Ring Road to Churwell Viaduct the only things existing today are the house on the corner of the now cut in 2 Milshaw , Ingles Offices and the 3 house on Elland Road at the bottom of Cottingley . I also notice that Churwell Cricket ground is not there I remember putting the numbers on the scoreboard around 1959/61 so how long did that last ? . The person who said his grandad worked here if you zoom in you might even see him in the yard somewhere they are that clear . Also in the far distance the Woodman can just be glimpsed as of last week I understand that is no more progress means another Starbucks/Costa or similar coffee merchant plus garage , enjoy .

My paternal grandfather worked all his life at Ingles Tannery at Millshaw (bottom of Churwell Hill, just on the bottom side of the railway bridge. He subsequentely moved onto the then new Ingles housing estate off Victoria Road where he raised his family. There is virtually nothing left of the tannery now, a decade or so ago you could still see the remains of some large circular pits where the leather was treated. these lay just below the bridge next to where a cottage was located that was I believe illegally extended.
