Oh my goodness .... not wishing to exhibit any snobbishness but when I think of the history of my old school ..... and BTW the plaque should at least have said 'CITY OF LEEDS SCHOOL' not 'LEEDS CITY SCHOOL' (Central High I strongly think would have been more appropriate).Sad days.... Apologies Patexpat; I'm sure it must have said 'City of Leeds School' - my memory at fault.

My only bit of pleasure was playing in the chess team and visiting proper schools with playing fields, nice outlooks, modern facilities etc, spent more time on the LCT busses schlepping between games at West Park, woodwork at the Mechanics Institute Woodhouse, swimming at the Olympic and Armley for the swimming gala, then athletics day at Temple Newsam. The masters were allright, Ernie 'get thettled' Stern was a gent, Stanislaus Leopold Mackiewitz was good, had Rocky wayed up as a fascist, Terry Clift, Mr Walshaw, Ced Felston, 'Tossy" Brostoff. Herbie Thompson was a superstar, he would be doing time these days, 1st class psycho & bully. Rags Buckley was a case, chain smoking and all. Stan Mac I heard went to Oz, the rest will probably have passed bless them, Willy Wombat should still be with us, guess Acker has gone to the great public lavatory in the sky, as his favourite pastime was 'checking them out.' Thanks Septic Tank - my English teacher's name from my very short time at City Of Leeds has eluded me for years - Mr. Brostoff it was! I remember him giving thorough discipline to a classmate (I remember his name, but I'll be nice!) who thought his racist comments comments cool.I was only there for a term and a half, 76-77 (before being dragged kicking and screaming 400 miles distant), straight from middle school, 13 years. Not all pleasant memories (girls excepted) - a lot of fights, racially divided unfortunately. At least 2 from my year are current BNP members, something that even 30+ years later doesn't surprise me in the least. Mackiewitz I liked, and was it Mr. Bennett for history? Rocky - well, let's just say he was old school. Should have had fun with Tom Browne...Some bright kids there too though. Outside of rugby, cricket and athletics (loved Temple Newsam!), it was the first real contact I'd had with Kidworld north of Holbeck. Strange bunch, you Northerners wereOne not very relevant question, thanks if anyone can answer: When did Hugh Gaitskell go from a middle school to a primary? Or did all Leeds schools stop the 9-13 age for middle schools simultaneously?Sorry for waffling - too much hooch

Further to my previous post concerning St. Michael's College, I would say that the square block on the roof contained a boxing ring and that the three windows immediately below belonged to the room where Form 1b (where I started in September 1943) was located. A spiral staircase led up to the ring.At that time Fr Jones was the Rector (he had nothing to do with education but looked after the administration) and the Prefect of Studies was Fr Doyle.

Seems all my schools have either gone to the great bulldozer in the sky (Osmondthorpe Primary & Middle) or have been amalgamated into some super college, new build etc (Intake High).Happy memories of penny club at Ozzie, having to do 2 and 3 day weeks when the heating packed in and being sent to a school on Potternewton Lane (well a prefab building) when the asbestos kicked in!!
