Bit mediocre this, but for what it's worth, there was a Tardison Burley Road which was partly in theBurley Rd, (aka Westfield CP, aka Rosebank CP!), school grounds but fenced off from us ragamuffins! You could make an emergency external call from it by opening a small cupboard door (approx.1ft 6ins square) which pulled outwardon a spring loaded hinge. When in this position, the caller was immediately 'on line' (Intercom)to a police station. Also, the 'Beat 'Copper would report to his station when doing his rounds Penalty for a false call was prison!(If caught!).You had to close it very carefullyor it would have your finger!I thing most of the old police boxes had this facility.Arry Awk

The old 'lock-up' is on the right hand side going down. Just a few stones of the outer wall standing, and the little barred window. Farbank, i've seen it now. Proper strange is that, i've noticed the ruins of the building there for years but had no idea of it's history. It;s hard to believe that old Armley miscreants (Simonm) may have once looked out from behind those bars!!

Hi Farnley-B; Glad you finally located what's left of the 'lock-up' at Armley. The very latest update from the local Historical Society, is, that Rebecca B. has notified the Society , that a representative of the developers has sounded enthusiastic about incorporating the remains, somehow/somewhere in the new project.! Good for them.

Yes the whole of Chapeltown police station used to be a fire station and you can even see the old garages around the side near the cash machine that have the engraving (coincidentally!) "FIRE STATION". I know though it had been a police station for a very very long time and the cells used to be in the basement!

Hi Farnleybloke,Drapesy, et al. (Who's he?),An important feature of that structure opposite KirkstallLeisure Centre /Bridge Rd corner ,by the 'dry' fountain was aGent's Standup Urinal! Since demolished, but I hope the fountain water wasn't recycled! The River Aire/Kirkstall Abbey Goit, runs just behind the standup! Saved on sewerage? There was a No3 Tram terminus there, and the drivers and conductors had a welcome 'relief' during 'turnround' operations!Actually, they used to 'Swing' the overhead cable 'pickup' poleround to face the other direction before the journey back to Leeds. This was in the days before the 'Bow' trolleys were fitted. (Much easier to manoeuvre). There were several accidents caused by the 'pickup' ball flyingoff the end of the pole after catching the overhead wires and striking some poor pedestrian below!('OO threw that!'.Can't remember what the conductresses had to do for relief, tho! Probably had 5 mins for a 'T and a P' in the Star and Garter acrossBridge Rd!Arry Awk
