Thanks for that Jogon, which is appreciated.

Hope I've managed to delete my earlier post as I've just read that it is a Potter of ancient Egypt at his wheel and a Camel plus, Portland Vase, Eagle, Scythe and a Boars Head.Motto reads; United strength is stronger. Can't understand the Egyptian link though and it wasn't mentioned either ??????

Also I read,The Stoke of Trent Arms is made up of devices previously used by the constituent six towns, although of the six towns only Burslem officially received a grant to use arms. The Hanley Arms provided the Dromedary Camel, (crest of the Ridgway family). I cannot though find a connection to the camel and the family.

Intrigued by these shields I've been down to photograph these today - but there are 2 I'm struggling with. Each pillar has 4 shields and I have identified them as follows s             3                             W w         2 C4                            a i             1                                l n                                             l e g             3                             o a         2 B 4                            f t             1                             e                                             Q                                                u                3                             e                                        2 A 4                            e                1                             n                                                s             City Square sideThere are three pillars which I have lettered from the City Square side as A B and C. There are 2 engaged pillars on the Queens hall side which therefore only show one complete shield. These are identical and are the arms of the LNER, mentioned further back in the thread. The pillars seem to be representing cities and towns as followsA- London and MidlandsB ScotlandC the Northbut the choices do seem very capricious!!!
