If ya want a decent model shop now Halifax Modellers World in the Piece Hall is about the best in the north of England now.Britannia Hobbies was were I spent most of my pocket money as a kid it used to be in the arcade that is now taken with Harvey nicks it then moved to the Victoria quarter and before closing for good was at the bottom of the Headrow. Beatties was the posh shop to me, the place for Tamiya kits, out of my price range except for birthdays and Christmas. There was a Toymaster store in the Schofield centre for a while that had a model section upstairs in a separate shop but that closed when they went in to administration. Modelzone has occupied two sites in the Merrion centre and is OK for paints and tools but apart from the occasional sale is pretty expensive compared to shopping on line. I built models as a kid but after discovering women and beer I gave it up then after a spell of ill health in the early 90's I went in to Beatties on my way back from LGI and I'm still building now.

Thanks Rehtnap. That's the one. He was a short fella with big glasses and a shiny bald pate and limited customer service skills - don't remember the deaf bloke though.

Don't know what's there now. It was open in 1980, I can't remember how long before and after that though. The shop was called Wonderland. It was a toy shop that had a large model selection.Their prices were lower than anywhere else. They were even cheaper than Woolworths. There was also a model shop on Church Lane, Crossgates in the seventies. The owner was miserable and didn't like customers, so I didn't go there much.Remember Britania models, in the Empire Arcade? They moved to the County Arcade in the mid nineties, then to the bottom of Eastgate, before disapearing for good.

There is a mail order model shop called Wonderland existing today, but being based in Scotland, I don't think it will be any relation.
