I was in Armley yesterday and opposite the White Horse pub is your usual newsagent/grocers/off licence type shop. But when you go in, half the shop is kitted out as a mobile phone repair shop!!You can get your fags, sweets and booze and have your mobile 'un-blocked' while you wait!!! odd!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Hi Stevie,The Prince shop was opposite Barclays bank (ex White Horse Hotel.) It was the shop near the corner of Manor Square and Clapgate with an angled, set-back doorway. There's usually a motorbike (like the one in the "When Doves Cry" video!) parked by the door. I think it's now a tattoo parlour or similar. The angled wall used to be pink with a big Prince mural on it. Next door is the Thai take-away, a bridal shop (ex Oasis patronised clothes shop,) NatWest and Motorworld by the lights.Hope that's clear! (PS I'm pretty sure they did sell records, as well as prints, T-shirts, etc.)

I'm not sure if anyone knows this, but there was a similarly Prince-oriented shop in the Castle Market in Sheffield back in't day. It was called Revolution, but was a pretty good indie record shop before pledging its allegiance to the Purple Dwarf of Pop. I was reminded of this as I went to have a look for it the last time I was in Sheffield and the shop still seemed to be there, still called Revolution and still painted purple. This could of course be related to the semi-neglect of the Castle Market, but it seems unlikely that there could be two Prince specialists in Yorkshire doesn't it? Did the chap in Otley decamp to Sheffield or vice versa?

Clankylad wrote: Not sure it was Christian fundamentalists or just plain idiots. I remember the Cook Report programme coming out around the same time as the 'satanic panic' about the supposed organised ritual abuse of children. Apparently one of the researchers on the programme, a bloke called Tim Tate, was a big believer in the whole 'phenomenon' before it was discredited. A vague and untrue link between the shop and child abuse therefore was all it took for some berk to spring into action. I seem to recall that they were regularly attacked by fundamentalists when the shop was at Hyde Park Corner to the point that they had the letterbox blocked up to stop all sorts of unpleasant things being pushed through it. Genesis P Orridge of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV did a lot to highlight their situation before and after the arson attack as they were also indicted in the Cook programme, which used material from Psychic TV's live performances, which were basically performance art, to suggest that they were performing acts of 'satanic abuse'. I'm pleased to find out they're still around.

"Do any of the ghosthunter/pagan/folklorist people on here remember a shop in north Leeds called "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (possibly Rounday area) in the mid 70s? Sold books and all things supernatural/occult, I think. "Hi Tasa, Steve, Actually you may be slightly out on dates on this shop Steve. According to the Sorcerer's Apprentice Esoteric Bookstore's own website (http://www.sorcerers-apprentice.co.uk) it first opened in Leeds in 1975 in Burley Lodge Road and their shop on Hyde Park Corner was burned down in 1989. They apparently only now trade via mail-order on the net but are still based in Leeds. Also, I found some interesting links about the Cook Report related to this shop and the firebombing of it on http://www.saff.ukhq.co.uk/cookmalg.htm where apparently some years afterwards the bookshop owner got his revenge by turning the tables on Roger Cook and doorstepping him (pics included). There's appears to be a rather strange forum attached to their website. (Well, strange to us ordinary mortals anyway - lol) and it's worth a surf. Weird to think that Leeds has hosted an 'occult underground' for so many decades yet so few 'lioners' know of it.Wonder what they do at Halloween? RegardsOwt4nowt

I knew SA opened around 1975 as I used to deal with them around 1976 and rfemember going up to Burley lodge Road after coming over by train from York where I then was.I knew they were still trading there.I haven't dealt with them in years since the owner banned me for appearing in a book he disliked. it used to be said in occult circles that once you got banned from there or served with a writ you had become someone in the occult world so I was quite chuffed at the time<LOL>.They began to lose trade once the internet opened up as p[eople could get stuff cheaper and they were quite pricey. There are some lovely stories about the place, but if anyone wants to hear them see me at a Secret Leeds meeting<LOL>.
