The cinema was opened in 1912 and was called 'Bramley Picture Palace' until it changed to the 'Lido' in 1931. last film shown was on 08/03/1961 - 'The Nudist Story' !I believe it was invariably called the 'Bug Hutch' . You can just make out a remarkable structure on the right hand side of the building - a staircase up to the projection room - by way of a fire escape. Wasn't JanCee banned from the site long ago when it used to be policed? I don't know why, I was new here myself at the time.

Wasnt it the infamous Scandy Bramley vs phil d debate? well i say debate it was more of a one sided insult aimed at phill, and then Jan cee jumped on board. To tell you the truth from my recollection she wasnt banned it was more of "im taking my ball home"sort of situ lol
There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

Blakey, Blackburn Hall was never a Cinema, the building prior to it being built was the Empire.

Notice the tram standard and lines on the Rodley service, which was cut back to Bramley Town End on 17th May 1938. Personally I don't remember The Lido so this picture is most interesting to me.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

It could be a really valuable resource but it barely gets used. I would love to see it house regular plays, comedy nights, children's theatre, classical and popular music but it seems to house tea dances, fit / fat clubs and one off private functions. It's really disappointing.

Blakey, Blackburn Hall was never a Cinema, the building prior to it being built was the Empire. Whilst I only have my old maps to go on, it always being Blackburn Hall in my lifetime, the 2500 series maps show the outline of the building which whilst being extended, still has the same footprint as the original cinema. If you look at the ariel photos of the building, you can compare the original outlines and the extensions, also, whilst it is a bit of a presumption, there is a picture on Leodis showing the re-opening of the Blackburn Hall, which I took to be the conversion of the Empire to Blackburn Hall. The 54 & 58 maps show it as the Empire Ballroom.. Also if my memory serves me right, you could see where the camera used to project from on the wall, the last time I went in there was when the local rock groups played there in the early 80's Unfortunatly I can't post my maps to show you what I mean.

Ads you could be right there, I will consult some older friends to see if that was the case. The frontage is 50's brick as are some bits addedd on the side, I had always assumed the whole thing was rebuilt. Not sure now you say that. I'll be that local rock group in the arly 80's was Argon. They also had a Friday night disco but it clashed with similar ones at the Windmill and Parish Hall too.
