I also left Leeds (1969) & have searched high & low for Pics of the old school. I can remember the slag heap opposite the school & the jammy at seniors (went to Foxwood) & Harehills s/h. This has got to be the best site on the web (along with Leodis) Cheers MICK.

Johnnyboy - I too was at Brownhill C. P. Boys, from 1952 to December 1957 when I left to start work. In those days we could leave at Christmas. In theory, we should have been in the same class but I can't remember a John - if that is your name. I'd read all the other posts but yours made me shiver..!! You'd remembered the name of the Student Teacher - Mr Gough. I remember him arriving at the school, and the PT slipper he delighted in using. Mr Barford was The Headmaster during the whole of my time. My first experience of him was in 1952 - I was a scared nine-year old in my very first classroom in the playground annex. He burst into the class and told us all to stand to attention. He then - in a very serious tone announced , "The King is dead, long live The Queen". I think I was totally bemused at the time. That formality - fanatically sustained by Messrs Broster, and Pugh, left me with a hatred of school. Broster the cane-man, Pugh - a knuckle at the back of the head, or get ready to duck - here comes the board rubber. He rarely missed. For some odd reason, Mr Darnborough didn't mind us using his first-name ... I wish I could recall what it was. Mr Pugh - the Art teacher, and my last - liked to draw cartoons on the blackboard. My last year was in the annex over the road when we were allowed to take our bikes to school. I only had a girl's bike that I'd had given and was often the brunt of certain remarks that I didn't quite understand, but at-least I had a bike. That might be difficult for younger people to now understand, but we grew up in a different World when one 'old penny' for the School Fund, was gratefully received. I thought I'd 'blotted-out' my days at Brownhill school ... some things I have, but many I haven't. I remember a few of the names I spent years with, but have never come across anyone I was there with.

Can anyone confirm this? There was a mention of a very tall Mr Noon. At College at my time there was a James Noon who was very tall. It might be the same person.Regarding the MG crash (Johnnyboy), I remember there was a photo in the evening paper. I was working by then, but I remember the Reception Engineer where I worked had a similar MG and showed the photo. Hi peterg,I went to St.Benedicts on Leeds & Bradford road between 1966 and 1971.We had a Mr Noon, taught history.Very tall, thin with gaunt features.Wonder if it's the same fella?

Sounds it might be him, but I left Leeds in 1960 so I have no idea of what he actually did after leaving College.

Does anyone have any pics of Roundhay High school on Gledhow Lane. I only found out recently that it had been demolished. I went to have a look and sure enough it's gone. I felt really sad when I saw the land with no school on it. It was a lovely old building. I looked on Leodis but there are only pictures of the boys school. I went to this school when it was the girls grammar school in 1970. It merged with the boys school in 1973. The following year we had to share the school with Allerton Grange because of their asbestos problem. We attended in the mornings and Allerton Grange in the afternoons.
