I'm sure that I read somewhere that at one time the police were responsible for putting out fires aswell as doing their normal duties (hence the old term 'Fire Bobbies').

Rikj - I've tracked down a much better picture on Leodis. The drinking fountain extreme LEFT is still there - though I don't think its dispensed water for many a year! (incidentally it has an inscription that says "DRINK AND BE GRATEFUL"!! That'll teach those urchins to know their place!). It looks like the surviving part, in your photo, is the lower section at the far RIGHT. Its a mystery to me why it was not demolished along with everything else, perhaps it wasn't part of the library or police station as you say - and is the unnamed building on the old o.s.map. its been derelict for 20-30 years to my knowledge - maybe more. I wonder what Phill D's mysterious info is???

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Not sure about that Drapesy, the ruined part looks more like the bit at the very far right of the building just before the white advertising boards. And it fits in with the lower roof. The door and windows of the bit on the left are too far apart to be the surviving piece.

Sorry, sorry - I always get my right and left mixed up!!Of course I, ahem, meant the other way round - I'll edit my original so it make sense!

And here it is. I think on the right is the community centre but ages since I've been there so can't realyl remember.

My Mam worked as an evening cleaner at the Crossgates police station. By that time it had been taken over by social services [Dept of Social Security?]. This would have been about 1970. The building did still have cells, I think two, but certainly one, as I can remember being warned by Mam that if I didn't behave I'd be locked in it.
