I thought I'd re-post the old engraving of the building as a comparison to Drapesy and Leodian's excellent photos.Judging by the remains now visible, the engraving is very accurate, even to the extent of showing five ground floor archways, with (unusually) six arched windows above, along the sides of the courtyard. The numbers of arches correspond with the photos - three along the back, and five along the sides. The upper windows are completely different though, having had their upper, arched portions filled in on the side windows, whereas the back wall has been totally rebuilt - note newer, larger, redder bricks.PS Would it be possible for someone (Brandy?) to superimpose the engraving onto Leodian's second picture?

When I looked closer at Leodian's picture which shows the gable-end of the Crown and Fleece, there appears to be faint evidence of a possible previous roof-line, suggesting some rebuilding at one time (between the arrows.) Either that, or the mark left by a demolished building which butted-up to it. Don't know if this is relevant, but it's all grist to the mill.Anyone agree, or am I seeing things?PS Hope you don't mind me re-posting your pic, Leodian?

On page umpty something here, is the Godfrey map which sshows buildings almost all the way down the road. When I have a mo I'll re-post it, if nobody else does it first - will be quicker than the week it would need to look through all this

ISTR that there was a covered ginnel between the Crown and Fleece and next door, running directly to Kirkgate. This would suggest that the mark is where this previous building's roof met the pub.

I don't mind at all Si for your reposting of the photo I took.I went to the site while I was in the centre of Leeds earlier today and took some more photos, but I've not uploaded them yet into my computer so I don't know how they look in a much larger form than on my camera.
