Now then,am i looking at the wrong building here ORdoes the roof of the Crown and Fleece,at the rear, extend over the yard and somehow meet up with the building (old stables) directly behind it?? Happy New Year Chris (so far the Gods seem to still be on my side btw).Yes when I first saw it, it looked different to what I'd seen before, but then, there have been so many pictures, drawings and maps - difficult to remenber every detail! But I do think this is different. Not sure if there are other pictures included, I'll take some time to look again PS Steve, can you post this pic on the Skulls resource thread as well?Oh,and Happy New Year to you as well!!

Will do - Looked again long and hard at the original - It doesn't really look as though there is a conection/covering.

I think it's just the angle, Chris. Otherwise, the roof covering the alley slopes all the way down from the ridge-tiles - unlikely. That part of Crown Court is very narrow, and it's hidden by the "chimney roof," IMO.

Yes I agree -I thought exactly the same thing at first Chris but the modern day picture shows the same feature, it is part of the main building fronting Crown Street. To the right of that building is a passage way, then the stable building.

Here's a 1970's picture of the Scotsman pub, suprisingly Hills furniture store is advertised above the pub itself. The article is actually about the Yorkshire Rippers first victim Wilma Maccan.http://yorkshireripper.com/ripperstory/ ... ma-mccann/

Perhaps they also had space upstairs above the shop too.

Don't forget, you could walk though the alley to the side of the Old Cloth hall at one time, so this in effect would have been a thoroughfair would it not? See attached from Google Earth....

That's right, Lee. A shortcut from Kirkgate to Crown/Assembly Street, directly under the skulls.
