Thanks for the information drapesy and Phill. I would never have known!Sorry but I've no more close-up photos, A few taken further out that are poor in detail. Most of the carvings are not in an easy and/or safe place to stand to take a good photo! I was also getting some odd looks from passerbys when I was taking those that I did! Just one point. The roof of the 'arch' seems to have been in disrepair for ages now. I'm beginning to think it is never going to be done!

The crucifixion shield is a bit of a puzzle, perhaps that's the odd one out and isn't a station destination.

This coat of arms features the wyvern of mercia, and the shield incorporates the crests of Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Leeds, Leicester and Lincoln - all places served by the company.Proudly displayed on the outside wall of Derby station is this coat of arms commemorating the Midland Railway whose headquarters were here. The Midland Railway was formed in 1844 and existed until 1923 when it was absorbed into the LMS - a longer lifespan than any of its successors.

There was so much skill, pride, and detail went into these kind of thing years ago, today all we get is vinyl logo stickers, and the best our illustrators can seem to come up with is SpongeBob SquarePants!

Not at all boring, Leodian, I have enjoyed your thread. It's a shame we never have time to "stop and stare"...... (I feel a poem coming on!)

Hi CaronI suspect nowadays that many people just cannot be bothered to "stop and stare". On the left of Albion Street coming up from Boar Lane there are 5 (well there were on July 21 2012) information boards about Leeds from its early history to present day. I took a photo of each of the 5 (for interest I've posted the early history one) but I was getting suspicious stares from some people (just like I got when I was taking the Queens Hotel arch carvings) no doubt wondering what on earth I was doing. I would not be surprised if many passersby did not even notice the boards!

People are so ignorant of their surroundings and history Leo, forget the stares, it is those who are ignorant. They're probably too busy rushing home to watch ''It's good innit..Eastenders' or some other brain deadening twaddle on T.V.Out of all the out of bounds places I've photographed, the only place I ever encountered anyone asking what I was doing, was when I photographed an old ghost sign in Harehills

It's nice Phill that there are some people who are interested. For example when I was taking some photos a little while back where the River Aire starts its run under the station I noticed I was getting looked at by some people. Though I need not have done so I explained what I was looking at and they became very interested as they knew nothing at all about the underground flow. It's nice when something like that happens.
